Fasting As A Spiritual discipline

One of the greatest ways to experience a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ is too fast.

Most people shy away from fasting because it can be rather intimidating. but let me assure you it should not be.

If I can do it, than anyone can. I use myself as a bench mark because well, I love to eat, shop and snack!  Here again, I also use my mom as a great example. She was ferocious when it came to fasting.  She was disciplined beyond belief in this area of her life because she was dedicated and she had a method that she used to help her fast effectively. And you can develop your own method too. One of my dear circle of friends and one of the Sacred Few fasts every Monday. All she would have been juice,

I started making fasting a consistent part of my life when we were living in Nebraska and Winters was going through such a difficult time with work.   I fast whatever I feel God is leading me to give up.  But I promise you, will hear the voice of the Lord.

During intense fasts, my mom would only drink chicken broth. Once she fasted for several weeks as Winters was applying for a job and was waiting to see if he had gotten it.  When we found out we got the job, I had not called my mom and dad for a few more days until the company could announce it.  Mom’s reply was “Well I am glad you called me as I have been fasting all this time.”  She had a laugh in her voice! This is no doubt incredible dedication, discipline and pure love. You can fast a day, a week or a month, but as the old Nike commercial says, “Just do it!” You will know what is right for you.

When Winters and I have gone through our Egypt experiences, I can guarantee you, I am fasting.  And when it is real warfare against the devil, then there is nothing more effective in my opinion than fasting and praying.  It gives you clarity, insight and results. It’s important to remember that fasting is not necessarily about food. You can give up anything.

One Lent I gave up Hobby Lobby. Really I am not kidding.  I love the store and cannot, I mean cannot, go in there without finding something every time. So I decided I would fast it for Lent.  Friends laughed but it took great discipline for me to not run in there and pick up “something.” Winters said I made up for it at Michael’s, but it really wasn’t the same, honestly.  The point is a fast should be a sacrifice: chocolate, Starbucks, alcohol, shoes – something you enjoy. If you don’t feel the loss, then you can’t press in and really deepen your relationship with the Lord.

Not All Fasting Is Created Equal

Here are just a couple of examples of fasting options

For the hard-core prayer warriors and those who think more, is more this Fast is for you! : The Daniel Fast. This is a 21-day fast eating only fruit, vegetables, some whole grains and water. Jenzen Franklin has a book on this very subject. Each year he and his congregation fast together. Can you imagine what God can do in a congregation or a family when they are united through the tool of fasting?

I have done this fast now four times. Winters and I did it once together.  It was an awesome experience, but really it took a lot of prayer.  You may have to adjust and individualize your fast just a bit to suit your dietary needs.  We must be wise Godly Gals.  I had to add in some cheese and more whole grains

For warriors feeling more moderate or that “more” is sometimes too much, there are alternatives. Choose a day and fast that whole day. Trust me, when you start out it may feel like a year but it is oh, so worth it.  Drink chicken broth or juice throughout the day.

I do this version a lot. I love to snack throughout the day, so this really is a sacrifice for me. I eat a small breakfast and then begin my fast at 9 a.m. I don’t eat anything until dinner that night with the family. So between snacks and lunch, I have given up a lot of food throughout the day.  It also works because it doesn’t interfere with the family dinner time.

For warriors just starting out, do whatever you can. Go slow.

Be prepared – because when you fast, with it often comes spiritual warfare.  It is sad but true.  You must be prepared because Satan is going to try to get you’re at you weakest time. Satan will use anything to get you off track. A friend will call for lunch the day you are planning to fast or someone will start a fight with you; your favorite pair of shoes will go on sale at 50% off. A million things will happen. All I am saying is be prepared.
