If you want to be treated like an adult you have to act like an adult.

This is a statement we often say around the Winters house.  That statement was said by a dear friend and counselor we know and needless to say, I love it.

But think about it, how true is this statement, not only for tweens and teens striving to become independent but frankly for all of us.

In order to gain independence and trust we have to demonstrate that we are independent and trustworthy.  That is a fact of life no matter our age.  So I suppose that today the message is that we must all  live the life we seek to have.  As the good old scripture reminds us,  “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

So teens if you’re striving to be treated more like an adult then you must set your mind, will and actions toward being more mature and act like an adult.  That is something only you can choose to do. Our behavior speaks volumes to others especially our parents.  Parents will love you no matter what but it is sure wonderful when you do your part around the house with a happy heart.  That goes for when you’re an employee, spouse or parent, too.

It is our responsibility as parents to notice the good behavior and acknowledge it in a positive way.  Especially when the actions of  our teens align with the choices and changes they want to make and a positive impact on the family.  The same goes for our spouses.  If they are trying to make a positive change support, encourage and back them up.  Praise goes a very long way!

Teens may you seek to be all that God has called and created you to be and may we live life in our passion, purpose!
