Too fast?

Fast cars, fast food and the fast lane? Or is it rather, to fast or not?

I say make fasting a way of life!  There is no doubt you will grow closer to God with fasting. If you have not heard from Him lately, fasting and praying can certainly heighten your sensitivity to hearing God speak to your life and circumstance. Fasting is a powerful spiritual discipline that sharpens and hones us as followers of Christ.

I was so blessed to have a Godly mother, a prayer warrior who fasted regularly.  She fasted, not to lose weight, but to seek the Lord.  Her dedication and example made it easier for me to make fasting a part of my life.  It was such a comfort to know that she was fasting and praying for me all the days of my life.

Often people shy away from fasting because it sounds far too difficult. Let me assure you, you can do it and the spiritual benefits are well worth it.   As you are fasting, it is a perfect time to pray, meditate on scripture, sing praises to the Lord and simply seek him while interceding for yourself and others.  You will certainly hear the voice of the Lord more clearly even if your stomach is growling.

When we are frustrated with life, we tend to question, complain, and criticize others and our circumstances. But if you need help, fasting is just the help you need and an effective way to face the issues of life.

Many associate fasting with Lent, which is associated with Easter and Christ’s resurrection. Lent lasts 40 days.  Just a FYI, you do not count Sundays because it represents the resurrection. Lent is all about fasting.  It is a time when you may  give up one of your favorite things such as chocolate, red meat, or even shoe shopping. Seriously, it is meant to be a sacrifice to the Lord. For many women halting shopping and new shoes are monumental sacrifices.

But I suggest fasting any time, not just during Lent.  Make it a spiritual discipline in your life.  You may choose to give up one of the items I listed or choose to fast all food on specific days or during certain time of day.  For example from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.  For Godly Gals like me who love to snack, this is a long nine hours.  The key is to just start fasting.

Just do it!  The intent of the heart is what counts. As you press in to the Lord and you will know what the Lord wants you to do.  Seek Him and ask the Lord for guidance.

I have one friend who fasts every Monday.  Other friends fast by only drinking juice, or only eating celery; my mom drank only chicken broth. (It was actually bullion, which is just a bit better).  I have always fasted as the Lord has led me.  For me, it is usually sometime during the week.

However, my mom would often go for weeks.  In fact, when Winters was  offered a new position years ago, Mom fasted and prayed for him.  When he was given the new job we were not to say anything.  Finally, the company said we could spread the word. So I called my mom and she said “well, I am so glad you told me.  Since I did not hear from you I just kept fasting”.  I never dreamed mom would have fasted several weeks.   She did though, and commented to me that she added crackers! yippie! woo whoo!

What dedication. What love.  What a gift to give.  What a legacy to leave behind. My mom was a treasure and adored Winters, can you tell?  What incredible love we can demonstrate to others when we intercede on their behalf.   I too have fasted for Winters many times as we faced tough times and the issues of life.  But at the end of the day how reassuring to know you sought the Lord intently for wisdom and direction. You my friend can be a conduit for Christ. How awesome is that.

So you probably know what I am going to say next, FAST!  Go for it!  It is time to live in the Fast Lane! Lay down that sandwich or chocolate candy bar or run out of DSW  right now and start fasting and praying. Seriously, today is a great day to go deeper with God.  You will never regret it.

I believe that this one small act will change your life forever. Jesus said “When you seek me you will find me.” As you seek the Lord through fasting and praying you will find Him and the answers you seek!

Be blessed and encouraged abundantly today as you live in the fast lane!

Corby, Although fasting use to be a big part of my prayer life, it is a discipline I have gotten away from. The Lord has given me great insight during those times that I fasted and pressed into Him. Thank you for reminding of this powerful tool. Thank you for the times that you have fasted and interceded on my behalf. You are a wonderful friend and a blessing to many, including me. Love, Cynthia
