There are seasons in our life and today was the beginning of a new season.

But with this particular season comes mixed feelings – those of joy and elation – yet  just a twinge of melancholy too.

School is back in session and all over Newnan you could hear the hallelujah chorus!! REALLY I am not kidding …  If you go outside you just might catch a bit of it still playing!

But today was different, not just because school was back in session.  The Middle SON was off to middle school.  It was a big day for my eleven year old, a really big day. And of course the Eldest SON and his friend just had to fill his head with horror stories and tips on how not to end up in a trash can up side down and head first.

Needless to say both the Eldest and his friend got a huge talking to and the whole “Are you kidding me”  and “Do you want to see me put you in a trash can head first because buddy I am sure I can”  and then the moral lessons came flooding out of me.  I just can’t help myself, things like “Do you want you want your brother to like you when you are older” and the of course I had to use the best of all – “What would Jesus have you do?”  I love that one.  It is the best of all but it really is the truest statement of all as well.

Right.  Fear not though, Eldest got lots of hugs and love as always.  that is until he says”Mommmmm.”

But the other reason the day was so different was that the youngest SON and I headed off alone to Elementary School.  Just he and I.  He is now in third grade and is really the perfect blend of Winters and me.  He loves to talk and tell stories in the greatest of detail and yet, when he has nothing to say, well he has nothing to say!

As was the case this morning in the car on the way to school.

We have a couple of traditions around the Winters house, besides dancing in the kitchen which you all already know about.

We have first day of school traditions.

The first, you get your picture taken by the door heading off to school.  Kind of a way to chronicle growth, rights of passage and well, just good old memories for me.

Second, we always play the theme song from Brother Bear, this started the year after the Eldest SON graduated kindergarten at a small private school.  His awesome teacher put together the greatest CD to play before and after the ceremony.  I think it was to inspire us, but it just made us all cry, I mean really cry!

Great song, great words.  I just love these words, really love it…

So from then on it was a done deal – on the first day of school we listen to it on the car ride!  I cry … The SONs sing … The SONs say “Mom are you crying” and I simply nod.

When we left Georgia for Oklahoma three or more years ago we played Brother Bear then too.  As we pulled out of Lake Ridewine just to inspire us..

So today was no different.

I hugged all the SONs goodbye and then I put in the CD of Brother Bear before we pulled out of the drive.  But before Winters loaded the two oldest SONs in his car for the drive off to middle school, I grabbed the Middle SON for one last hug and  just to let him hear a bit of the song.  With a grin from ear to ear, he gave me a great big hug and he simply tilted his sweet head and with tender eyes looked at me and said ” Brother Bear, Thanks mom.”

Life is short, moments can never be recaptured, but we can capture a moment!

Off I went with the youngest SON and I reached back and touched his sweet hand as I often do when we are in the car and I was barely covering his sweet small fingers in mine and I was reminded it was indeed a new season!  Life is full of changes and we must be ready for them.  Sometimes we must just roll with it as Winters would say.

So on this Monday I pray you remember the season you are in.  Savor what is good about it and learn from what isn’t.  Life is special and unique in and of itself.  Never forget who you are and the dreams and the inspirations God has placed in your heart for such a time as this.

Be blessed and encouraged abundantly today as we celebrate the season we are in and the dreams and inspirations God has yet to still fulfill in our lives!

So good, Corby! Yesterday, for the first time, I dropped the boys at the mall BY THEMSELVES (they’re 13 and 16, now) as I was about to clobber both of them. I took about an hour and a half on my own so I was able to speak to them without yelling when I picked them up. They had fun and I got some peace and quiet 🙂 They won’t start school for a few more weeks, but it’s always a little bit of an emotional time for me, too. Drew will be a sophomore in high school and James will be starting junior high, so it’s another milestone year for us! We have to treasure them while we have them, althought they don’t always make it easy for us to do so. All in all, I’m thankful they’re healthy and able to go to school, and I know I will miss them one day when they’re gone. Love you, Jill
