One thing I love about the New Year is it that is perfect time to start looking closely at your life.

As a counselor and life coach, I think self-examination is a great thing anytime of the year but JanYOUary is indeed a perfect time to focus on YOU.

I am not talking about making a New Years resolution where you try to accomplish some herculean goal that is unrealistic and unattainable which will soon be surrendered in defeat and self loathing.

My friends, If we do not set out to get somewhere on purpose we will wander aimlessly through life.  Life will either happen to us or we will make choices that help guide us to God’s greater purpose for us and we will create the life we want.

Seeing our life from an honest perspective is critical.  This soul-searching  helps us see our thorns in the flesh, our brokenness and our weaknesses.  The great news is that God can help us lead the life He has called and predestined us too.   But we must do our part.  He can’t do that work for us.  We must want God to restore our broken, dysfunctional and frayed lives.

Remember that nothing changes if nothing changes.

Sometimes we can get stuck.  Stuck in a place, a thought pattern, behavior or addiction and we can’t seem to get unstuck.  We simply surrender to it and no longer fight back.

It is my desire that sometime today on this Thankful Thursday you might take a moment and get out your journal or note pad.  Then ask yourself some questions like these I have listed:

What do I need to let go of that is no longer working for me or those around me?

What things in your life that you will no longer tolerate either those that are self-imposed or done by others?

What behaviors, habits, relationships and/or things are no longer well suited for my life now or the life I want to lead?

Where do I want to be next year at this exact time and day?

What has to change to help me live and be in that place I want to be in?

What are some Specific, measurable, attainable, relatable and trackable goals that I need to do to get me started to build that life and become that person.

I want to invite you this Thankful Thursday to fight back for the life you want.  Don’t give up and don’t give in.  I urge you to use this month as springboard to a new life and new and FabYOUlous You this JanYOUary!  I suggested tackling one or two issues first.   Seek for wisdom for guidance from the Lord and most all make the commitment to change! Be firm with yourself and fight back the old way of living with prayer, scripture and, let yourself talk articulate the change you want to see now!

We have a choice.  Yes, we have to choose …

Choosing to change means admitting what we are doing isn’t working.  It may be problematic or just headed in that direction.  But  God is a God of restoration – I am positive of that too.  He makes all thing new again.  He can restore your life, your dreams, your health, your finances, your family and your hope again.

You may find yourself in a place you never thought you would be today.  You may even have come to a place where the streets are not marked, well that is how Dr. Seuss so eloquently put it.  And worse yet, you may be anything but the person you set out to be and when you look in the mirror on this Thankful Thursday you are asking yourself  “Who am I?”, “Who have I become” and  “How did I get here?”

I have asked myself in the past who could I turn to in a time of crisis now that my parents are gone.  Who could I count on to help me through my time of unmarked streets.  I must then pause and remember I have a Savior who will never leave me or forsake me.  I take great comfort in that and I hope you do too.  He loves you and is not judging you but wants to help you live a free from bondage.

As God say is his word, He is a refuge, our ever-present help when we are in trouble.  He is mighty to save.   He is the one who parted the Red Sea.  Jesus made the lame to walk and blind to see.  No problem you face today is to great for our Lord and Savior.

It is never too late to ask for God’s to help.  He is the one who can show us the way, deliver us, help us learn new ways of living.  He can  heal our broken hearts and navigate the unmarked roads we may have found ourselves on.  I am certain we can never get too far from God’s love or His will.

As long as we have breath to breathe we have the ability to change and live a new life.

So today on this Thankful Thursday, why not consider this the first day or first month of the rest of your life!

Be blessed and encouraged as you live life in your passion and purpose.  And may you be set free from all that is keeping you tethered to a life that no longer serves you well.
